Back in the day in Scotland, you always played golf with a caddie who worked at the golf club. They didn't work on Sundays, so if you wanted to go out and play, you had to carry the bag yourself. That is when the Sunday bag was created as a light and convenient bag to carry around.
Today, it is a bag for those who don't take their score too seriously. Who can get by with a few clubs, a 3-pack of balls, a handful of tees, a few beers, and a speaker hanging off it.
